The Opportunity
 
The Water Operations Branch is a branch within the Infrastructure Department. The branch’s key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution systems. This includes the repair and maintenance of drinking water treatment systems, water mains, valves, hydrants, residential main shut off valves, repair and replacement and water meters for service billing; the inspection of water mains and services; the installation of Industrial / Commercial / Institutional water services and meters, new home meters and hydrant metered gate valves; the Backflow Prevention Program; the resolution of water quality or water pressure issues/complaints; the maintenance of City standard drawing details for water specifications; and the prevention of infrastructure damage through the locating services for all of the City of Barrie's buried infrastructure in accordance with "One Call" legislation.
 
Reporting to the Supervisor of Compliance and Technical Support, the Administration Student – Compliance and Technical Support (Student) is responsible for supporting the delivery of departmental services and programs and providing courteous and timely customer service. Specifically, this position assists with  the Backflow Prevention Program, work order management the Drinking Water Quality Management System, and inventory management. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the Compliance and Technical Support Section

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in Secondary School, College, or University*
*Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
 
Experience 
  • Three (3) months of experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
 
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • General knowledge of principles related to customer service and administration
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
    • work collaboratively in a group setting to achieve a desired objective, goal and/or outcome
    • interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and contacts in a community/client service environment
  • Basic customer service, attention to detail, administrative, oral communication, and written communication skills
  • Intermediate computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word)

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week
 
Wage: $18.11 to $23.44 per hour
