The Opportunity
The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
Under the general direction of the Driver and Operator 2 - Specialized Vehicle, and reporting to the Roads Operations Foreperson, the Roads Operations Labourer (Student) is responsible for assisting with the maintenance of City roads, walkways, signs, sidewalks, boulevards and drainage infrastructure. Specifically, this position trims vegetation, repairs sod damage, collects litter, and assists with asphalt and drainage infrastructure repairs, and sign installation and repairs. Overall, this position plays an integral role in maintaining attractive and safe public spaces that enhance the quality of life for City of Barrie citizens, visitors, and businesses.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Currently enrolled in Secondary School, College, or University*
Experience

Six (6) months of cumulative part-time experience or three (3) months of full-time experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
Knowledge/Skill/Ability

Demonstrated ability to:
- exert effort to lift, push, pull, or carry objects for short periods of time
- work independently with minimal supervision

Basic skills include: Active Listening; Attention to Detail; Problem Solving; Teamwork

Availability to work outside of scheduled work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties
Conditions of Employment

Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
*Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.

Work Term: May to August 2026
Location: Operations Center, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week, with a varying schedule to support business demand
Wage: $18.08 to $20.98 per hour
