The Opportunity
 
The Transit and Parking Strategy Department strives to provide customer focused, efficient, reliable and affordable public transportation and parking services that link people, workplaces and the community and promotes economic development within the City of Barrie.
 
The Parking Control Technician (PT) is responsible for the secure collection of parking revenues, the daily monitoring and maintenance of parking control devices, and the upkeep of related parking infrastructure. Working under the direction of the Supervisor of Parking Operations, this role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of municipal parking systems. The Parking Control Technician (PT) provides hands-on support in the field, responds to service issues, delivers courteous customer service, and supports digital parking technologies, contributing to the effective management of the City's parking operations.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Two (2) year College Diploma in electrical/mechanical engineering or related discipline

Experience 
  • Two (2) years of cumulative part-time experience or one (1) year of full-time experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
  • Demonstrated municipal parking maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated experience using maintenance tools and equipment
 
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS), Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Traffic Manuals, Electrical Safety Act
  • General knowledge of the following principles and standards; traffic control, vehicle equipment and operation
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • utilize hand and finger dexterity to perform sensitive equipment and other adjustments and mechanical function
    • operate equipment and vehicles
    • read and interpret plans, electrical/mechanical schematics, maps, and drawings
  • Basic skills include: Attention to Detail, Collaboration, Customer Service, Multitasking, Problem Solving, Record-keeping, Teamwork, Time Management, Troubleshooting, Verbal Communication, Written Communication
  • Basic computer literacy using the following systems and software: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Teams) and specialized parking control software applications
  • Availability to assist with after-hours questions, concerns, or emergencies; to attend evening/weekend meetings or special events; or to work outside of designated normal hours per week
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, or holidays
 
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence in good standing
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
*Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
 
 

Other Important Information

Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario
 
Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.
 
Wage: This is a temporary part-time non-union position with the following 2025 pay range:
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $32.39 to $38.79
