The Opportunity
The Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability Department is comprised of three Branches: Solid Waste Operations, Solid Waste Management Policy and Planning, and Environmental Risk Management and Compliance. Overall, this Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's Landfill site, which includes non-hazardous solid waste disposal, household hazardous waste receiving and disposal, leaf and yard waste disposal and composting, and solid waste collection and disposal. The Environmental Risk Management and Compliance Branch aims to minimize environmental risk associated with growth and corporate infrastructure, including Source Water Protection, Climate change strategy, Sustainable Development Strategy, Contaminated site response, sewer use by-law, spill response, ground water and surface water monitoring and investigations, and site plan reviews. This Department also develops and maintains strategies that promote circular economy and environmental sustainability, including waste diversion programs, sustainable waste management strategy, public outreach, and education.
Under the general guidance and direction of Manager of Environmental Risk Management and Compliance, the Environmental Field Technician (PT) position is responsible for supporting the Environmental Officer with inspection and sampling duties. Specifically, this position conducts inspections of waste and wastewater streams at commercial, industrial and institutional facilities; assists with the monitoring of groundwater and surface water quality; and participates in various environmental monitoring activities including the collection of surface water, groundwater, wastewater and soil samples. Overall, this position plays an integral role in supporting environmental inspecting, monitoring and sampling activities within the City of Barrie.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Two (2) year College Diploma, Environmental Technician or related discipline

Experience
- Eight (8) months of cumulative part-time experience or four (4) months of full-time experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- Medical documentation to confirm medically fit to wear a respirator, within two (2) months of hire
- General knowledge of road infrastructure maps including structural systems, plumbing systems, sewers, creeks, watershed boundaries and lot grading

Working knowledge of current environmental industry legislation, regulations and best practices including the following:
- Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations
- Environmental Protection Act and associated regulations
- Clean Water Act
- Provincial Water Quality Objectives
- Regulation 347
- Working knowledge of laboratory and sampling techniques
- Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to perform various tasks such as climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough terrain and wading in creeks
- Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects exceeding 10 kg regularly
- Intermediate report writing, statistical analysis, organization, interpersonal, customer service, oral and written communication and record-keeping skills
- Intermediate computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Demonstrated ability to carry out the physical duties of the position which include climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough terrain and wading in creeks
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*

Other Important Information
Location: Environmental Centre, 272 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, ON
Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.
Wage: This is a temporary part-time non-union position with the following 2024 pay range:
