The Opportunity
The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail; winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the Corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
The Labourer position assists in maintaining the sidewalks, roadsides and stairways of the City of Barrie to ensure that the citizens and visitors of Barrie can commute safely. In the spring, summer and fall, this
position assists in the maintenance and repair of sidewalks, roadsides and stairways. In the winter, this position shovels, sands and salts the sidewalks and stairways. In addition, this position ensures that debris
and litter is removed from sidewalks, roadsides and stairways.

The City of Barrie is accepting applications for upcoming full-time Labourer vacancies. The Operations Department is establishing an eligibility list of qualified candidates who will be considered for future casual, temporary and/or permanent full-time opportunities. Applying to this candidate pool enables a candidate's application to be maintained on file so that they may be considered should a vacancy become available. The eligibility list will remain in effect for a maximum of nine (9) months, unless depleted before that time.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

Experience
- Two (2) months of experience working in a municipal work environment
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations and associated protocols required to ensure a safe working environment
- General knowledge of the following principles and standards: municipal construction, maintenance and equipment operations; truck and equipment safety; safe lifting and handling procedures; collection and disposal procedures for debris, litter and bulky items; WHMIS and Book 7 of the Ontario Traffic Manual

Demonstrated ability to:
- communicate effectively with the general public in a positive, courteous and respectful manner
- perform strenuous work, including heavy lifting of objects exceeding 10kg
- Intermediate interpersonal skills
- Basic computer literacy using Microsoft Office Suite and CityWorks
- Availability to work outside of scheduled work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, or holidays
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
*Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
Other Important Information
Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, Ontario
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement
Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2026 pay range:
- Pay Level: Level 1
- Yearly Salary: $49,504.00 to $54,891.20
- Hourly Pay Rate: $23.80 to $26.39
