The Opportunity
The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
The Operator 2 – Specialized Vehicle position maintains the roads of the City of Barrie to ensure that the citizens and visitors of Barrie can commute safely. In the spring, summer and fall, this position maintains and repairs the roads. In the winter, this position plows, sands and salts the roads. In addition, this position collects and disposes of roadside and road debris, litter and bulky items.
The City of Barrie is accepting applications for upcoming full-time Operator 2 vacancies. The Operations Department is establishing an eligibility list of qualified candidates who will be considered for future temporary and/or permanent full-time opportunities. Applying to this candidate pool enables a candidate's application to be maintained on file so that they may be considered should a vacancy become available. The eligibility list will remain in effect for a maximum of nine (9) months, unless depleted before that time. The administration of this candidate pool will be done in accordance with Article 13:06 of the CUPE Collective Agreement.

Experience
- One (1) year of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
- Demonstrated experience working in a municipal construction work environment
- Demonstrated experience operating heavy equipment and vehicles
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- General knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: WHMIS and Book 7 of the Ontario Traffic Manual, including the setup of a temporary work zone traffic control; Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations and associated protocols required to ensure a safe working environment
- General knowledge of the following principles and standards: municipal construction, maintenance and equipment operations; vehicle and equipment safety; safe lifting and handling procedures; collection and disposal procedures for debris, litter and bulky items
- Demonstrated ability to:
- perform strenuous work, including heavy lifting of objects exceeding 10kg
- conduct road infrastructure repairs
- operate manual and motorized hand tools
- effectively lead and direct an assigned crew
- write clear and concise reports
- maintain accurate records of job materials used and time spent
- estimate materials and time management skills to prioritize the completion of tasks
- operate heavy equipment and vehicles
- operate roadway snow removal equipment, including roadway snow plows and salters/sanders
- Intermediate skills include: Customer Service; Interpersonal; Verbal Communication; Written Communication
- Basic computer literacy using Cityworks
- Availability to work outside of scheduled work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s Licence with a “Z” endorsement in good standing
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
*Please note that this is a requirement for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
Other Important Information
Location: Operations Centre, 165 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie, ON
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement
Wage: This position is within the CUPE Local 2380 Bargaining Unit with the following pay level and 2025 pay range:
- Pay Level: Level 4
- Yearly Salary: $61,547.20 to $73,694.40
- Hourly Pay Rate: $29.59 to $35.43
