The Operations Department is comprised of three Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, and Roads, Fleet and Technical Operations. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; and maintenance of the corporation’s fleet of vehicles and equipment.
The Technical and Stormwater Operations Section is responsible for the development of operational programs to support the maintenance of City-owned transportation and stormwater infrastructure assets, as well as conducting compliance related inspections and investigations that focus on Civil Engineering and Minimum Maintenance Standards.
The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:
- Inspecting the work of City contractors related to such projects as asphalt paving, catch basin repairs, maintenance hole repairs, curb and sidewalk replacements, roadside restoration, sidewalk bus stop improvements, park improvements, and stormwater management maintenance
- Reviewing project contract documents, standard specifications, engineering drawings, provincial standards, and construction safety regulations
- Liaising and coordinating work schedules with City contractors and other project stakeholders
- Maintaining accurate record keeping relating to various ongoing project activities
- Using portable GPS equipment to record and document basic engineering and maintenance investigations on existing roads and stormwater infrastructure, which may include: culverts, storm drain inlets and outlets, grading, retaining walls, curbs, sidewalks, street signs, guiderails, and fencing
- Inputting data and other information from the field into the CMMS Work Order management system
- Data processing and analyses to support project delivery and asset inventory development using Microsoft Excel
- Investigating and resolving complaints related to municipal services
- Liasing with the general public in a professional, courteous manner
- Other duties as assigned
- Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized College or University*
- Enrolled in a a recognized College or University Co-op program, preferably in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or closely related program, and returning to full-time studies
- First Aid Certification is considered an asset
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and contracts
- Dependable, reliable, and able to work well independently or with others
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams), as well as ArcGIS and Auto CAD
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers Licence in good standing
- CSA-approved safety footwear in good condition
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
