The Opportunity
 
Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.
 
Under the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Programmer, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Camp Leader position is responsible for running-day-to-day camp activities for groups of campers at one of the City of Barrie’s camps. This position is responsible for the safety and well-being of a group of 6 to 10 campers ranging from 4 to 16 years of age, while providing guidance and mentorship to Volunteers. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the delivery of recreation camp programs at the City of Barrie.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in Secondary School, College, or University*
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate from HIGH FIVE® National **
  • Safeguard Training from the Lifesaving Society**
  • Standard First Aid, CPR Level C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications**

*Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
**Must provide proof by June 30 and/or first date of hire

 
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission and values
  • Basic customer service and communication (oral and written) skills
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)

*Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Policy. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
 
 
Other Important Information
 
Work Term: Approximately 3 months – up to September 6, 2025
 
Location: Allandale Recreation Centre (190 Bayview Drive, Barrie), East Bayfield Community Centre (80 Livingstone Street East, Barrie), Peggy Hill Team Community Centre (171 Mapleton Avenue, Barrie)
 
Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 40 hours per week, with a varying schedule to support business demand. 
 
Wage: $16.20 to $17.25 per hour
