The Opportunity
 

The Infrastructure Department is comprised of five Branches, including three Design and Construction Branches, the Wastewater Operations Branch, and the Water Operations Branch. Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems including water supply, treatment, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and the design and construction of the City's infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, roads, sewers, watermains, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, water towers and reservoirs, etc.

The Corporation of the City of Barrie has a work placement opportunity within the Infrastructure Department for an advanced Civil Engineering Technology or Technician student to assist in various aspects related to the inspection of municipal infrastructure projects.

The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following :
 
  • Assist in the inspection of municipal infrastructure installations, including concrete and asphalt maintenance, watermains, sewers, roads, and other municipal infrastructure to ensure that they are built in accordance with the designated specifications.
  • Maintain records which document quality control issues, and quantity measurements.
  • Assist in gathering information for and preparing daily reports.
  • Communication with contractor, residents, and businesses.
  • Distribution of notices.
  • Be able to work independently as well as a team player.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in a recognized University or College, specifically in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Technician program*
  • Have completed at least two full years of Post-Secondary Education, preferably in Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • Enrolled in a a recognized College or University Co-op program
*Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
 
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • Have good organizational, communication and public relation skills
  • Have basic to intermediate skills in Autodesk (Auto CAD), GIS (ArcMap), and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.)
  • Have basic understanding of municipal infrastructure, incluidng sewers and roads
  • Have basic engineering survey, drafting and computing skills
  • Knowledge of Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 is an asset
  • Dependable, reliable, and able to work well with little supervision
  • Wiling to work outside on construction sites daily
  • Have appropriate CSA approved safety boots, in good condition
 
Conditions of Employment
  • Have a valid Ontario Class Driver's License (preferred Class "G") with a reliable vehicle for transportation while at work (travel reimbursement will be provided)

  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
*Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees who have met this criteria will be exempt from this requirement.
 
 
Other Important Information
 
Work Term: May 5, 2025 to December 12, 2025 (approx. 8 month work term)
 
Location: City Hall, 70 Collier Street, Barrie, Ontario
* A monthly parking pass will need to be purchased at the employee discounted rate.
 
Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement. Hours are 7:30am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, with a thirty (30) minute lunch period and two fifteen (15) minute work breaks. The applicant must be prepared to work additional hours as required.
 
Wage: $18.91 per hour
