The Opportunity
 
Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.
 
Under the general guidance and direction of the Programmer and Supervisor of Recreation Programs, the Recreation Program Assistant (PT) provides support to the recreation programs process and the day-to-day operations of the Recreation and Culture Services Department. Specifically, this position provides assistance to the Recreation Programmer and Supervisory team, providing support with various administrative, programs/events, communications, and general tasks associated with recreation programs. Furthermore, this position meets assists with tracking or repairs of program/training equipment. Additionally, this position receives, responds to, or redirects inquiries, questions, or complaints by phone, email, and in person, from internal and external contacts regarding recreation programs. Overall, this position plays an integral role in supporting recreation programs and the Recreation and Culture Services Department and enabling the delivery of comprehensive event programming services.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications) 
  • Two (2) year College Diploma in Marketing, Event Management, Tourism Management, Recreation and Leisure Services, Public Relations, or related discipline

Experience 
  • Two (2) years of cumulative part-time experience or one (1) year of full-time experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
 
Knowledge/Skill/Ability 
  • Demonstrated Ability to:
    • interact effectively and courteously with all levels of staff and contacts in a political and community/client service environment 
    • maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
    • maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders
    • perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission, and values o work independently with minimal supervision
    • work under pressure to meet deadlines or peak period workloads 
  • Intermediate skills include: Customer Service; Interpersonal; Problem Solving; Research; Teamwork; Time Management; Written Communication
  • Basic computer literacy using the following systems and software: Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word), Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and the Internet
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, or holidays

Other Important Information

Work Term: 10 Months - December 2024/January 2025 to November 2025
 
Hours: The normal hours of work are up to and including 24 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.
 
Wage: This is a casual part-time non-union position with the following 2024 pay range:
  • Hourly Pay Rate: $24.61 to $33.38
Location: Allandale Recreation Centre (190 Bayview Drive, Barrie), East Bayfield Community Centre (80 Livingstone Street East, Barrie), Peggy Hill Team Community Centre (171 Mapleton Avenue, Barrie)
