The Opportunity
Recreation and Culture Services builds vibrant, healthy, active and connected communities by providing facilities and programs that give all Barrie residents an opportunity to participate in recreational activities. Key responsibilities include identifying community recreation needs and interests, developing and delivering recreation opportunities which meet these needs and interests, maintaining and operating recreational and cultural facilities to provide a setting for these activities, and managing the provision of space to external community providers and groups.
Under the general guidance and direction of the Recreation Aquatics Programmer, and reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the Lifeguard/Instructor (Student) position is responsible for ensuring the safety of swimmers, class participants and guests at the City of Barrie’s pools. Specifically, this position rotates between instructing aquatic lesson programs and monitoring recreational open swim programs. Overall, this position plays an integral role in providing a safe environment for swimmers, class participants and guests of the City of Barre’s pools by acting as a Lifeguard during open swim programs and an Aquatic Instructor during lesson programs.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Currently enrolled in or is a student in High School, College, or University*
- National Lifeguard (NL) Pool Certification from the Lifesaving Society
- Swim Instructor Certification from the Lifesaving Society
- Lifesaving Instructor Certification from the Lifesaving Society (recommended)
- HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate from HIGH FIVE® National within three (3) months of hire
- Standard First Aid, CPR Level C Certifications
*Minimum of 15 years of age and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
- Demonstrated ability to perform in a manner which is consistent with corporate goals, vision, mission and values
- Demonstrated ability to demonstrate/participate in aquatics lesson programs for the duration of a class session
- Demonstrated ability to exert physical effort to stand for extended periods of time
- Basic oral and written communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
- Availability to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays, as required
Conditions of Employment
- Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certifications
- National Lifeguard (NL) Pool Certification from the Lifesaving Society
- Swim Instructor Certification from the Lifesaving Society
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check*
*Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees may be grandparented from this requirement in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure.
Other Important Information
Wage: This is a student non-union position with the following 2023 pay range:
- Hourly Pay Rate: $19.81 to $21.12 per hour
Hours: The normal hours of work are up to 44 hours per week with a varying schedule to support business demand.
